Overseeing renovations is an exciting project, with its own unique challenges—especially if you’re living in the space while the work is ongoing. You can suddenly feel overwhelmed by the clutter of furniture and other things you had to move out of the rooms being repaired. It can get pretty hectic, not to mention that renovations can be quite messy: imagine the amount of dust created by a skill saw or a sander, or dripping paint and muddy boot tracks across the floor. What’s more, it’s much easier to do this kind of work when there’s no furniture in the way and the rooms to be remodelled are empty.
Clear the Space
It’s best to clean out as much of the space as possible before even getting started. Think of what you’ll need during the renovation, what you use most often, and put everything else away.
Place your belongings in boxes and seal them with adhesive tape. Ideally, cover or wrap your furniture to keep it from gathering dust, and take it outside the space being renovated. Leave space for the workers’ tools and materials. If you’re redoing the floor, for instance, the new floorboards have to be stored ahead of time in the room in which they’ll be installed.
If you don’t have enough space to store your furniture and belongings at home, a self-storage unit is actually ideal. Remember that you can schedule when the renovation work starts, but you can’t always know exactly when it’ll be finished. Also, before you put your furniture and things back where they belong, you’ll probably have to do some cleaning and remove all the dust in the refurbished area as well as the adjoining rooms.
