Are you ready to retire?
Most people are enthusiastic about moving in together, getting married or having a child, and they publicly celebrate these life events. But when the time comes to retire after a long life of hard work, it all normally happens quite privately. Working less and having more time to relax is a major change in your life: you’ll have to adapt to it gradually as you discover the advantages of your new lifestyle.
Consider What Comes Next
You might want to consider whether or not you want to stay in your current home for the rest of your life. Some of the things you should contemplate are how many stairs, rooms or floors there are in your house, how old you are and any current or expected mobility issues. After your kids have left home, do you still need 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms? If most of your money is invested in your property, you might want to downsize in order to increase your liquidity so you can keep enjoying the same standard of living now that you’re relying on a pension… or you could treat yourself to a trip!
If you decide to move, you may have a hard time deciding what to do with your belongings. Some things may hold sentimental value, while others could be useful to other family members. You may have grandchildren who haven’t moved out yet and who could need your furniture later. If you think some of your belongings might be of use to someone in the near future, consider storing them for the time being in a self-storage unit.
Things Worth Keeping
You will obviously want to keep your washer-dryer and other appliances, your kitchen implements, and all the other things you use on a day-to-day basis. A word of advice: if it’s something you use regularly, even just once a week, keep it handy. Everything else can be sold, given away, thrown out or stored. What you can put in storage are the antiques you don’t want to part with yet, your seasonal decorations and clothing, etc.
